Hyaluronic Acid (also called Hyaluronan or hyaluronate)

Hyaluronic Acid (also called Hyaluronan or hyaluronate)
Often taken to replace the synovial fluid lost through either injury or arthritis.

Hyaluronic acid (HA, hyaluronan) is a special protein that exists naturally in the body, it is found in greatest concentrations in the synovial fluid of body joints for lubrication. It is also be found in smaller concentrations in the vitreous humor part of the eye (the fluid), also abundantly in the skin. As we get older, the body produces much less Hyaluronic Acid and our joints become stiff.  Movement can be painful, and the skin becomes wrinkled and dry.

Tissue hydration, lubrication and cellular function using Hyaluronic Acid (Hyaluronan) is significant, because is found in many tissues of the body, such as the skin, cartilage, and the vitreous humor, it is well suited to biomedical applications targeting these tissues. Hyaluronic Acid (Hyaluronan) has been used to induce tissue healing, notably after cataract surgery, and there are some preliminary clinical studies that suggest oral administration of Hyaluronic Acid has a positive effect on osteoarthritis.
